J.A. Latumeten Ambon.

Background Hand (manus) radiography is an examination that requires precise positioning, particularly for the oblique projection, which requires the hand to be held stable at an angle of approximately 45° during exposure. At the Radiology Installation of Tk II dr. J.A. Latumeten Hospital Ambon, the oblique projection of manus examinations is still performed manually without a dedicated fixation device, so that patients experiencing pain or limited mobility often move during exposure, reducing radiograph quality and increasing the risk of repeat examinations.
Objective This study aims to determine the design and construction of a fixation device for hand (manus) radiography examination with oblique projection at the Radiology Installation of Tk II dr. J.A. Latumeten Hospital Ambon.
Method This study used a Research and Development (R&D) approach, consisting of needs identification, design planning, material selection, device fabrication, and testing. Data were collected through observation, documentation, and device testing during manus oblique projection examinations, then analyzed descriptively using tables, percentages, and narrative description.
Results The resulting fixation device was made of radiolucent styrofoam arranged in a stepped, tiered structure with an adjustable incline of 40–45° and fitted with a securing strap. Testing showed that all positioning criteria (7 of 7) and all technical radiograph criteria (7 of 7) were met by 100% according to four evaluators, with no artifacts caused by the device. Compared with the manual technique, the fixation device improved the stability of the patient's hand position, the accuracy of the oblique angle, and patient comfort during the examination.
